2026-07-21: Why Are Airline Trays So Slippery?

Good, fast, cheap: Pick two.

During an extended, recent travel debacle I had some time to ponder an interesting travel mystery: why are the trays in main cabin so slippery?

I decided to Google this question, and the AI slop I was presented with was that smooth (and therefore slippery) trays were easier to clean and turn around quickly for the next flight, with suggestions that the flight attendants themselves were cleaning these trays. Trays that are grippy would of course attract dirt and hair to their grippy part, and because they are grippy, this would be hard to remove and accumulate.

The trays themselves are, in reality, mechanically cleaned. They are removed from the plane, and put through a dishwasher. Perhaps there is some fractional additional cost associated with cleaning these trays in this way, but it is extremely unlikely that a first class tray (and these trays stick and stay in place) are cleaned in special machine or otherwise.

The more likely answer here is that trays that are more complicated than a simple injection molded piece of plastic are more expesnive. Such injection molded plastic will, however, be smooth and slippery. But cheap. Very, very cheap.

Does It Matter?

Some commentators on the internet suggested that it did not matter that the trays were slippery, with one even suggesting that it had not been a problem in 350+ flights. This is, assuredly, a lie. One need not fly more than 10 times to discover a tray table that is not flat. And it does not matter the cabin. The majority of tray tables on a plane are not supported on both ends. Leaning on these tray tables over time will bend them, and they will slope down. The worst offenders are the tray tables that come out of the seat arm when you are seated at a bulkhead. I do not think I have ever had one that was level.

Additionally, planes move around. They turn and bank and go up and down and sometimes, there is turbulence. This will of course cause a slippery tray to move about, along with everything placed on top of it.

Reimagining the Iron Triangle

The Iron Triangle (good, fast, cheap: pick two) referenced in the title seems to indicate there is not a good solution to the problem, except if we instead reimagine the tray.

If instead of making the tray sticky... what if we just made the tray attach or catch on the table mechnically? One could redesign the tray with small nubs on the bottom to catch the edge of the tray table. Clips, separate from the tray, could be made to clip the tray to the table itself. The tray could take advantage of the small indent used to place your beverage, which is usually not possible to use when you have a tray (although the tray might then rotate, because this indent is not centered).

A slightly more costly (and less earth-friendly) solution might be to have some piece of material, slightly rubbery (perhaps), and single use, which can be placed under the tray, and performing the same function as making the tray sticky without introducing additional cleaning issues. And no, a napkin does not work for this despite what some other commentators on the internet suggested.

The tray could also be secured by means of an elastic band passing around the tray and table, and so on and so forth. I am sure there are many other feasible ideas to solve this problem as well.

This Seems Like a Divergence From The Normal Content

Despite this being a post about airline tray tables, a key point I am trying to highlight here is that oftentimes a solution is presented as-is, or a solution is assumed, or a solution is based on prior experience, and those kinds of solutions can lead to dead ends.

Software development, in particular, benefits from outside of the box thinking, applying new solutions often gained from hard-won know-how. When a user comes to you with a predefined solution, it is easy (and common) for that solution to be a dead end, for various reasons. A parallel is the sticky tray table. It likely does the best job solving the problem but one can realistically imagine this being a soltion with an additional annual cost to an airline in the millions of dollars. In 1987, American Airlines removed a single olive from the salad served in first-class and saved $40,000 a year. This is a much bigger scale than that.

And this is why we need to question assumptions, and question prepackaged solutions, and think carefully about tradeoffs and costs. Otherwise we might end up in a sticky situation with slippery trays.

(For the record, the slippery tray did result in me dropping my fortunately empty cup).
